Georgetown Undergraduate Scholarships

Each year Georgetown University awards several hundred need-based scholarships to eligible undergraduates. Individual awards range in value from $1,000 to more than $60,000 per year, depending on the student’s financial need. In addition to small loan and work-study awards, these scholarships meet 100% of eligible undergraduates’ demonstrated financial need.

A portion of the scholarship assistance Georgetown awards to eligible undergraduates is funded by the generous gifts of University benefactors. Without this support from alumni and friends of the University, Georgetown would not be able to continue to meet the full financial need of all our aid applicants. We would like to extend our gratitude to the many donors who partner with us to help our students achieve their dreams.

Students that receive named scholarships may be asked to submit a Scholarship Impact Statement. These impact statements give students the opportunity to share their accomplishments with scholarship donors. This is optional, and completing it does not affect students’ financial aid package.

By applying for financial aid at Georgetown, students are considered for these scholarships. There is no additional application process.

Named in honor of the year Georgetown was founded, 1789 Scholarships are funded by generous gifts from alumni, parents, and friends of Georgetown who want to help the University enroll and retain the very best students. 1789 Scholarships provide $3,000 per year in loan relief (students receive less loan and more grant aid) and also help fund need-based Georgetown scholarship. Students offered 1789 Scholarships are also admitted into the Georgetown Scholarship Program (GSP).

Candidates for these scholarships are nominated by the GU Office of Undergraduate Admissions based on their admissions applications.

Georgetown University athletic grants-in-aid are awarded by the Department of Athletics on the basis of athletic and academic potential. Many are awarded based on demonstrated financial need for scholarship assistance, and participation in a particular intercollegiate sport. Further information about these opportunities can be obtained by contacting the GU Department of Athletics at (202) 687-2435.

The University’s John Carroll Scholarships are named in honor of Georgetown’s founder, Father John Carroll (1736-1815). Although Fr. Carroll was never president of Georgetown University and never served on its faculty, it is to him that the University owes its existence. Appointed superior of the American Mission by the Pope in 1784, Father Carroll saw the need for the education of the young American Republic’s Catholic citizens and began planning an academy.
