Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are financial aid given in recognition of financial need, academic achievement and/or special talents and contributions.  Grants and scholarships are considered a “gift” and do not need to be repaid.  They come from many sources including (but not limited to) the Federal Government, State, institution and/or outside scholarship agencies.

Federal Grant Programs

To qualify for Federal Grant Programs, students must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

 

Pell Grant

Federal Pell Grant is awarded to U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens who demonstrate exceptional financial need.

 

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)

FSEOG is awarded to U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens who demonstrate exceptional financial need.

 

State Grant Programs


Minnesota State Grant

Minnesota State Grants are available to students who have a qualifying EFC based on their FAFSA results and are either a resident of the state of Minnesota or graduated from a Minnesota high school. To qualify for Minnesota State Grant, a student must have completed a FAFSA application prior to the 30th day of that term.

The first time you are awarded State Grant funds, you will need to complete the Minnesota State Grant Questionnaire.

 

Minnesota Dream Act

The Minnesota Dream Act allows undocumented students who are residents of Minnesota to be eligible for state grant programs. Students should complete a MN state financial aid application for the MN Dream Act. Students are also encouraged to review general information on resources available to undocumented students at the MN Office of Higher Education website.

 

Minnesota Indian Scholarship Program

The Minnesota Indian Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to eligible Minnesota resident students who are of one-fourth or more Indian ancestry and demonstrate financial need for an award.

 

Minnesota GI Bill

The Minnesota GI Bill program was established to provide financial assistance to eligible Minnesota veterans and service members as well as eligible spouses and children of deceased or severely disabled eligible Minnesota veterans.

 

Fostering Independence Grant

The Fostering Independence High Education Grant is a new state financial aid program that seeks to eliminate barriers for Minnesota students, under the age of 27, who were in the foster care system at any point after their 13th birthday.

Students must complete the Free Application for Federal  Student Aid (FAFSA) OR Minnesota Dream Act and indicate ‘yes’ to the foster care question(s) on the financial aid application. The Minnesota Department of Human Services will confirm that information and notify Augsburg (If Augsburg is their first choice on the FAFSA or the MN Dream Act application). Student who meet all eligibility requirements will receive the Fostering Independence Grant as part of their financial aid package

 

Institutional Scholarships and Grants (Day Students)


Maximum Augsburg Aid Policy: The combination of any Augsburg gift aid along with the federal Pell and SEOG grant and the Minnesota State grant cannot exceed the cost of Augsburg University tuition and direct fees.

 

First-Year Scholarships

First-year scholarships are awarded at the point of admission based on information that is provided in the application. Notification of the scholarships are done through the acceptance letter. Recipients must be enrolled full time in the day program working towards their first bachelor’s degree.

 

Transfer Scholarships

Transfer scholarships are awarded at the point of admission based on information that is provided in the application. Notification of the scholarships are done through the acceptance letter. Recipients must be enrolled full time in the day program working towards their first bachelor’s degree.

 

International Student Scholarships

International student scholarships are awarded at the point of admission based on information that is provided in the application. Notification of the scholarships are done through the acceptance letter. No separate application is required to be considered.

 

Center for Global Education and Experience Scholarships (CGEE)

The Center for Global Education and Experience offer scholarships to eligible students attending Augsburg CGEE’s own programs.

 

PRISM Scholars Program

The PRISM program is designed to support Augsburg juniors and seniors who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

 

SABO Scholar

The Sabo Scholar program provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in civic life, study the political process, work on public policy, and explore careers in public service.

 

American Indian Recognition Full Tuition Program

Augsburg’s American Indian Recognition Full Tuition Program aims to support and promote the importance of American Indian students on campus. The program will cover all remaining tuition and fees after federal and state gift aid has been applied for eligible students starting in Fall 2022. Visit the American Indian Recognition Full Tuition Program website for more information.

 

Scholastic Connections

Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for high-achieving undergraduate students of color at Augsburg University designed to assist students succeed in completing their undergraduate degree and prepare them to be engaged, successful citizens of the world on graduation by facilitating career development and planning.

 

TRIO Scholarship

The TRIO/SSS Completion Scholarship is awarded to upper class Augsburg TRIO/SSS students who:

  • have timed out of federal Pell grant, or Minnesota State Grant, or other term-limited scholarships
  • have utilized other forms of gift aid as much as possible, and still have unmet need
  • are on track to graduate by August, 2018
  • have an approved Intent to Graduate form on file with the University Registrar (if at least 92 credits are completed)
  • have registered appropriately for fall semester according to graduation plan and best financial aid options
  • are active participants in TRIO/SSS

Alumni Grant

Students who received their Degree from Augsburg University and return to Augsburg as either an Adult Undergraduate or Graduate student are eligible to receive a grant. The grant amount for the Adult Undergraduate program is $50.00 off per credit. The grant amount for the for graduate programs is $80.00 off per credit. This grant is made available to students at the time of their admission only and may not be used concurrently with any other institutional scholarship or grant program.

 

Parent Grant

Students who have a child who is currently attending Augsburg University are eligible to receive a grant. The grant continues for the parent/guardian until the parent/guardian graduates. The graduation timeline for the child has no impact on the grant continuing for the parent/guardian. The grant amount for the Adult Undergraduate program is $50.00 off per credit. The grant amount for the for graduate programs is $80.00 off per credit.

 

Americorps/Peace Corps/Lutheran Services Corp Tuition Grant 

All who have served in Americorps/Peace Corps/Lutheran Services Corps may receive this grant. Please inform your admissions counselor of your service to receive this grant.The grant amount for the Adult Undergraduate program is $50.00 off per credit. The grant amount for the graduate programs is $80.00 off per credit. This grant is made available to students at the time of their admission only and may not be used concurrently with any other institutional scholarship or grant program.

 

Augsburg Partnership Grant

The Augsburg Partnership Grant applies to new enrolling students only and allows employees of partner institutions to receive a tuition discount in the form of a grant. Students receiving the partnership will have their tuition deferred if their employer provides tuition reimbursement and the appropriate forms are completed.The grant amount for the Adult Undergraduate program is $50.00 off per credit. The grant amount for graduate programs is $80.00 off per credit. Review the list of participating employers. This grant may not be used concurrently with any other institutional scholarship or grant program.

 

Military Tuition Grant

Augsburg offers a grant to Adult Undergraduate and Graduate students currently serving full- or part-time in any branch of the United States armed forces or veterans of any branch. For more detailed information, including additional VA benefit programs, visit the Military Support website.  Please inform your admissions counselor of your service to receive this grant.The grant amount for the Adult Undergraduate program is $50.00 off per credit. Legacy Grant

Student’s who have had parents, grandparents, siblings or a spouse who received their degree from Augsburg University are eligible for this grant. The grant amount for the Adult Undergraduate program is $50.00 off per credit. The grant amount for the for graduate programs is $80.00 off per credit. This grant is made available to students at the time of their admission only and may not be used concurrently with any other institutional scholarship or grant program.

 

Partnership Referral Grant

Student’s who have a referral from someone that could have qualified for a partnership grant (ex: spouse that works at Wells Fargo) are eligible for this grant. The grant amount for the Adult Undergraduate program is $50.00 off per credit. The grant amount for the for graduate programs is $80.00 off per credit. This grant is made available to students at the time of their admission only and may not be used concurrently with any other institutional scholarship or grant program.

The best time to begin researching scholarship opportunities is in your junior year of high school. You may also contact your church and other organizations to which you or your family belong to inquire about scholarship opportunities.

Please make sure to include the student’s name and 8-digit student ID number.  Scholarships will automatically be applied evenly between fall and spring semester unless otherwise noted by the scholarship organization.

 

Augsburg University Outside Aid Policy:

• A student may receive outside aid/scholarships in excess of the cost of tuition. All aid (federal, state, Augsburg, and outside aid/scholarships) for a student must fit within the student’s Cost of Attendance. (COA). If funding is in excess of the COA, the University would reduce Augsburg aid.  *Any scholarship or grant funding that is in excess of tuition and fees is considered taxable income.

• The combination of any Augsburg gift aid (merit or need-based aid awarded at the point of Admission or later in a students’ tenure) along with Pell grants and Minnesota State Grants cannot exceed the cost of Augsburg University tuition and fees.

• If an outside scholarship applies to a student’s account after need-based federal loans have disbursed, the student can keep any disbursed need based loans.

• Outside scholarships are considered need-based aid, as is American Indian Funding.

• Third party payments from the following sources are not considered need-based aid: Veterans Administration, Vocational Rehabilitation and State Services for the Blind

 

Cost of Attendance:

• All aid for a student must fit within the student’s Cost of Attendance (COA). Cost of Attendance is the calculated cost of attending the institution, including books/supplies, tuition and fees, and room/board. The COA is set by the University each year. Any increase to a student’s COA is a professional judgment and, thus, requires appropriate documentation and review by a counselor.
