Some state agencies administer retraining (also called "cross-training") programs for workers who have been laid off. These programs specifically target adults who intend to go back to school to learn a new trade or skill that will help them find employment. In Minnesota, for example, more than 1,300 laid-off workers received training grants worth $4.3 million. The money was distributed through the Minnesota Jobs Skills Partnership Board. If you are going back to school to get a better job, you should inquire about retraining, cross-training and displaced workers grants.

Most states offer financial assistance to students who are disabled. The programs vary from state to state, as do the qualifications for being classified as disabled. However, if you are disabled, you should begin investigating this option early on, since it can take several months or even a year to get certified for the appropriate program.

This partnership between the federal and state governments provides grant money to undergraduate and graduate students who have financial need. Each university elects to participate in the LEAP program and determines who will receive LEAP grants. You should contact your financial aid office at the college you attend for more details. LEAP awards range from $100 to $2,500 per year. Your state agency may be able to provide you with a list of colleges that participate in the LEAP program.

Your state is a gold mine of information and resources. You just need to ask. While you are speaking with someone from your state agency, be sure to ask about any other resources and services that your state offers. Some sponsor workshops to help families apply for financial aid while others have their own publications that they will send you (for free!) on how to pay for college. It's important that you learn all that you can about the various programs offered by your state.
