2024 High School Scholarships

The Sharrod Patterson Memorial Scholarship

A memorial scholarship honoring and remembering the life of Sharrod Patterson given to a Quality Education Academy senior who wants to attend HBCU. Sharrod worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters, helped launch WRAM Student Radio at Winston-Salem State University, and served as a devoted educator at Quality Education Academy (QEA) in Winston-Salem for nine years, continuing to inspire many young minds during his tenure.

The Kim and Chris Henson Scholarship Awards

The Kim and Chris Henson Scholarship Awards are given in honor of their two daughters, student-athletes at Reagan High School who pursued advanced degrees followed by meaningful careers in teaching and medicine. Kim Henson serves on the Board of Directors of the Shallow Ford Foundation. She and her husband Chris are residents and active members of the Lewisville community.

Marvin's Garage Doors Scholarship in Honor of Marvin Brown

This occupational training scholarship honors Marvin Brown, founder of Marvin’s Garage Doors and is available to a Yadkin County student for a career in the trades such as electronics, construction, or welding.

The Tammy S. Bauer Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is established to honor the memory of Tammy S. Bauer who graduated from Northern Lehigh High School in Pennsylvania in 1990.  In an effort to create positive change in a person’s life, the Tammy S. Bauer Memorial Scholarship offers financial assistance to an NLHS graduate that has over come hardship with determination and is committed to achieving a brighter future through higher education.

The Bonnie M. Chappell Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship honors Bonnie M. Chappell who overcame many challenges in her life. Bonnie worked for decades at Hanes Hosiery and on the family farm alongside her husband, Cecil. When she was over 40 years old, she went back to school to obtain nursing degree. This scholarship is available to Yadkin County residents seeking to continue education toward a nursing degree or credential.

The Alpha and Omega Corn Maze Scholarship

Alpha & Omega Corn Maze is a 20-acre agritourism complex in Hamptonville, featuring maze trails, hayrides, horse drawn wagon rides and 30+engaging activities. Van & Jennifer Hemric along with partners Jason &Lori Walker began operating the agritainment complex in 2013, entertaining customers that started with meager beginnings and evolved to what it is today –a 5-acre site filled with challenging trails, attracting nearly 50,000visitorsannually, and providing employment to roughly 40 people each season. This scholarship was created to benefit current and former employees of Alpha & Omega Corn Maze seeking to continue education toward a credential.

The Mary Elizabeth Dodson Conrad Scholarships

In honor and memory of Mary Elizabeth Dodson Conrad's life, her many sacrifices, and her humble service. Mary, known as Liz to many, worked at a Burlington sock factory to pay her way through nursing school. Mary's daughter Angela and her husband, John Golden, established a healthcare scholarship in Mary's name in 2021.

The Mason H. Hunter Vocational Educational Scholarship of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce 

Up to $2,000 for a 2024 graduate of West Forsyth, Reagan, or North Davidson High School. Applicants must plan to attend a 2-year or 4-year program of study leading to a degree or certification in any trade, technical, or vocational field with a clear career pathway. The Mason H. Hunter Vocational Education Scholarship of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce honors the life of Mason H. Hunter, who passed away unexpectedly in March 2018 at the age of 17.

Tools for Trades Scholarship

Gwyn Services has partnered with the Shallow Ford Foundation and Forsyth Tech to create the Daniel Boles Memorial Tools for Trades Scholarship, which awards 3 graduates each from the Forsyth Tech HVAC, Electric, and Plumbing Certificate Programs with a fully equipped tool kit to jump-start their new career. This year's award is supported by a gift from the Emily Millis-Hiatt Fund of the High Point Community Foundation.

The Clarence "Big House" Gaines Reynolda Rotary College Assistance Program

The Reynolda Rotary College Assistance honors the life and legacy of Coach Clarence “Big House” Gaines, Sr. Coach Gaines was a motivator, encourager, and positive life-changing influence in hundreds of young people’s lives in Winston-Salem. The award is given to an alumnus of Cook Elementary School, which Reynolda Rotary has supported in many ways over the years.

Fall Adult Scholarships

The Foundation is offering several scholarships specifically for adult students returning to college or beginning their degree or certification program for the first time. Open to students who graduated high school in 2022 or earlier. The application period for these opportunities is now open. Click below to learn more about each scholarship and how to apply. The Charles and Robin Paul Scholarship Award

Robin and Charles Paul are active members of the Chris Paul Family Foundation; Robin also serves on the board of the Shallow Ford Foundation. They are dedicated advocates for education, working closely with organizations trying to level the playing field for children. This scholarship was established in 2021 to support adult students working to further their education.

The Salem Glen College Assistance Program

An electrical engineer by trade, Richard Bunker, and his wife, Pat, valued education above all else and believed that everyone had the right to higher education. In his retirement, Richard found great joy in tutoring all levels and ages of students, ranging from middle school through graduate school. He and Pat would have fully supported the great things that Salem Glen and the Shallow Ford Foundation are doing by not only providing financial assistance to deserving students but offering a mentor to take the journey with them. This award is given in loving remembrance, thanks to their daughters.

The Wayne C. Matthews Continuing Education Award

Dr. Wayne Curtis Matthews served as Director of the Yadkin Center at Surry Community College. He unexpectedly passed away on June 23, 2020. Our foundation joins the community in forever being inspired by his kindness, heart, integrity, service to others, commitment, and unwavering leadership in education, all of which were guided by his faith. This scholarship opportunity is offered to honor his dedication to Yadkin County and SCC’s Yadkin Center and serves as one more way to honor and celebrate Dr. Matthews’ life, his contributions, and his tremendous model of servant leadership that he lived into daily throughout the community he loved.

The Clarence "Big House" Gaines Reynolda Rotary College Assistance Program

The Mason H. Hunter Vocational Educational Scholarship of the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce

This scholarship honors the life of Mason H. Hunter, who passed away unexpectedly in March of 2018 at the age of 17. This scholarship results from community support from the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce, the Hunter family, and countless individuals who stepped forward to honor Mason's life and support students working towards a vocational certificate or degree, something Mason hoped to do. This opportunity is also open to students from West Forsyth, Reagan, and North Davidson High Schools.

The Leslie Martin Scholarships

John Stewart, a long-time supporter of higher education and a Rotarian, created the John Stewart Scholarship Fund of the Shallow Ford Foundation, which funds several scholarships. This award honors Ms. Martin, an educator at West Forsyth High School who retired in 2022, for her impact on hundreds of young adults as they prepare for the next step in their educational journey. The award encourages interest in technology, business, and finding ways to serve the community.

The Rebecca and Danny Green Music Scholarship

Also supported by the John Stewart Scholarship Fund, this award supports a student who was involved in music programs at West Forsyth High School. It is given to honor the influential music teaching careers of Rebecca and Danny Green, which has spanned nearly four decades in Forsyth County.

The Timothy M. Dunn Memorial Scholarship

Timothy M. Dunn had an impactful influence that inspired all those who knew him – from his teammates in high school and college to his clients and colleagues from his career as an Associate Financial Advisor. Tim passed away unexpectedly in 2022 at age 31 from an undetected aneurism. The new scholarship for WFHS wrestlers and team-support members reflects the program that helped shape who Tim became. It was established in 2022 by Tim’s parents, John and Catherine.

The Thad & Mary Bingham Education Assistance Award

Thad and Mary Bingham were long-time Clemmons residents who loved their community, family, and Clemmons United Methodist Church. They generously gave back in a variety of meaningful ways, including the establishment of the Thad and Mary Bingham Fund with the Shallow Ford Foundation, which has supported many community initiatives and programs.

The Coach Murph Scholarship

Pat Murphy, affectionately called “Coach Murph”, is considered the #1 athletics fan among students and staff at West Forsyth High School. Coach Murph has spent nearly three decades supporting the coaching staff and students at West Forsyth. He attends every practice and game, helps in between as he can, and truly brightens the lives of those who have the privilege of interacting with him. The W.F. Fund established this scholarship in honor of Pat Murphy’s joy-filled spirit and his unwavering commitment to West Forsyth through its athletics.

The Alpha and Omega Corn Maze Scholarship

Up to $2,500 for a student attending a 4-year college or $1,250 for a student attending a 2-year college. Scholarship awards are sent directly to the student’s academic institution and may be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and other direct expenses at the institution only. Eligible candidates must ​have worked at Alpha and Omega Corn Maze for a total of 50 hours or more within a season in one of the last three seasons. Priority is given to students who are ​working towards a degree or credential in the field of agriculture.

The Coach Murph Scholarship

Applicants must be a 2024 senior at West Forsyth High School who demonstrates the same qualities as Coach Murph: good character, hard work, leadership, and the ability to overcome challenges while a leader on the field of play, in the classroom, and in the community. Preference is given to applicants with unmet financial needs in paying for their degree and applicants who have a connection to Coach Murph.
