What scholarships are there for studying abroad?

QUESTION: I am planning on studying abroad in Italy. Are there scholarships to help? The study abroad program does not offer any money and neither does my institution. I don't want to miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime! Signed, Italy Bound

Dear Italy Bound: Through studying abroad, you not only learn another language but a different way of life. It would be a shame for finances to prevent you from taking the opportunity. Here are some sources that can help:

The American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) offers 110 scholarships per year of up to $1,000 each for students to study abroad on one of its programs. For more information visit www.aifs.com.

The Rotary International Ambassadorial Program offers approximately 1,000 awards to students and professionals to travel abroad. Get more information from your local Rotary Club or at www.rotary.org.

While a loan is not as desirable as a scholarship, it may give you the extra funds that you need. The International Education Finance Corporation helps to provide loans for students to study abroad. Get more information at www.iefc.com.

For more information, the Institute of International Education (IIE) publishes the book, "Study Abroad Funding for U.S. Students," which provides a directory of grants and fellowships to study abroad. You can purchase the book at http://www.iiebooks.org.
